Science Under the Stars: Gravitational Waves

Presented By:
New Jersey State Museum

A free science talk in the Planetarium with guest speaker is Dr. Michael Strauss.

If nothing can escape from a black hole, what happens when two black holes collide with one another? In the last ten years, astronomers have learned the answer to this question by detecting the ripples in space and time that a pair of colliding black holes make. This talk will explore how this awesome discovery has been made, how it really proves that black holes exist, and how it supports one of the most mind-blowing predictions of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. Professor Strauss will also discuss related discoveries that give insights into how gold (and other heavy elements) are created in the collisions of stars.
